The multifaceted Sunny Kang doesn't just take photographs. She's also a designer and illustrator at the Chicago Tribune. Her official portfolio can be viewed at http://gnak.in. Other photos taken in her free time or during travels can be found on her Tumblr at gnak.tumblr.com.
What cameras and lenses do you shoot with?
A Nikon D3, with 35-70mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8, 70-200mm f2.8 VRII lenses. Film-wise, I shoot mostly with a Canon AE-1, sometimes with a Yashica Electro 35.
Do you prefer film or digital?
To me film and digital are different. There are pros and cons to each. Digital is manageable, especially when dealing with clients or models. Film feels more sentimental because I don't edit them at all. I develop my own film in the comfort of my own bathtub. It's one of my favorite pastimes.
How would you describe your style of photography?
I'm still learning about it. I think many photographers struggle with the idea of adopting one's "own style" of photography. To me that remains a daunting task, not only because I can't put my finger down on what my style is, but also because I'm afraid it will lead me to be wary of change. Some writers spend decades trying to find their voice; I think photographers share that journey.
What do you like taking photos of?
I grew up moving around a lot and being sad about it. So I like taking photographs of things that symbolize that time, or that location, or that person at that time beautifully. When I come back to a certain location, I'm taken back to that moment.
Anything else you'd like to mention?
Photography, and any form of art, is a subjective experience. There is no objective "good" standard or a bad one. There is, however, a photograph many will like. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the best photograph. It's just well-liked. I also like to believe a truly talented photographer doesn't need to buy a bunch of expensive equipment. He or she has the ability to see images before they've been created and enact it using patience and available tools . . . and taste!
